Limitations, fixed / Shopify order search, fixed for B2B buyers

Shopify order search, fixed for B2B buyers.

Native customer accounts filter order history by date and nothing else. The Account Tools module gives buyers real search across status, PO, SKU, and location, plus the reporting and exports finance keeps asking for.

TL;DR

Native Shopify order search in B2B customer accounts filters by one thing: order date. There is no buyer-side search by SKU, product, PO number, or location, and the Customer Account API has no SKU or product filter to build one on. The Account Tools module of B2B Supercharge lets buyers search their entire order history by status, PO, SKU, or location, with saved filters, exports, and spend reporting inside the account they already use.

The gap

Shopify's B2B customer accounts handle the basics well. Buyers can view order history and company location information, track orders, submit return requests, and place reorders by duplicating a past order. All of that is native and documented.

Search is where it stops. Shopify's documentation lists exactly one buyer-side filter for order history: order date. There is no search box over line items, no PO lookup, no SKU filter, and no location slicer in the native accounts UI.

The developer surface confirms the ceiling. The Customer Account API's orders query filters by confirmation number, order name and number, dates, purchasing entity, and shipment status. The name and confirmation number filters only arrived in May 2025. There is no filter field for SKU, product, or PO number at all, so even a custom portal cannot ask the API the questions buyers actually ask.

Reporting follows the same pattern. Merchants get Shopify Analytics with custom dashboards and reports, with no dedicated prebuilt B2B report suite named in the documentation. Buyers get nothing: no spend view, no reorder patterns, no exports. The full picture of native constraints lives in the Constraints Ledger.

Why it hurts

Every search the account cannot answer becomes an email to your team. "Find the order with PO 4471." "When did we last buy BR-2041?" "Send me everything shipped to Warehouse 2 last quarter." These are routine procurement questions, and native Shopify B2B answers none of them self-serve. Your customer service team becomes a lookup desk, and the workload scales with order volume, not with problem volume.

The mismatch is structural. B2B buyers file, reconcile, and reorder by PO number and SKU. A date-only filter assumes they remember when they ordered instead of what they ordered.

Multi-location companies feel it worst. Shopify's two contact roles split visibility sensibly enough (ordering-only contacts see their own orders, location admins see all orders for their location), but neither role gets tools to work that history. A head-office buyer covering a dozen ship-tos has no way to slice orders by location, and no export to hand to finance.

The workarounds people try

Route it through support

Works on day one. Fails by month three: every lookup interrupts your team, buyers wait hours for answers they should get in seconds, and the ticket count grows with every new company you onboard. You have made your staff the search engine.

Email scheduled CSV exports

Someone on your side exports orders and mails spreadsheets to key accounts. The file is stale the day it sends, versions multiply across the buyer's team, there is no drill-down, and the export job is now a permanent human process nobody owns happily.

Build a Customer Account UI extension

The legitimate engineering path: build search into the account with Customer Account UI Extensions. The catch is the API itself. Its order query cannot filter by SKU, product, or PO, so real search means syncing every order into your own index and keeping it current. Apps also see only the last 60 days of orders by default; older history requires Shopify's approval for all-orders access. It is a build-and-maintain project, not a setting.

Install a D2C order tracking app

Most order-lookup apps are built for parcel tracking. They answer "where is order #1001," one order at a time. They do not answer "every shipped order containing this SKU for Warehouse 2," and they know nothing about company locations, POs, or buyer roles.

The fix: Account Tools

Account Tools is the B2B Supercharge module that lets buyers run their own account: teams, roles, approvals, and the piece this page is about, order search and reporting.

Native Shopify B2B gives buyers a date filter. Account Tools gives them search by status, PO, SKU, and location, saved filters, exports, and spend reporting, inside the same customer account.

It installs as a Shopify app on top of native B2B. No replatform: buyers stay in the customer account they already log into, and your team works in the admin they already know. The base platform is free and every module switches on independently, so you can start with Account Tools alone and add bulk ordering or the rest of the suite when they hurt enough.

Frequently asked questions

Can Shopify B2B buyers search their order history?

Barely. The native customer account filters order history by order date only. There is no buyer-side search by SKU, product, PO number, or location in the documented feature set.

Can buyers search Shopify orders by SKU or product?

No. The native UI has no product search, and the Customer Account API's order filter has no SKU or product field, so even custom portals cannot query it directly. The Account Tools module adds SKU-level search across the buyer's full history.

Can buyers find a Shopify order by PO number?

Shopify lets buyers submit PO numbers at checkout, but its documentation lists no PO filter for retrieving orders from the customer account or the Customer Account API. Account Tools makes PO one of the core search fields.

Does Shopify have B2B order reporting?

Merchant-side, Shopify Analytics offers custom dashboards and reports, with no dedicated prebuilt B2B report suite named in the docs. Buyer-facing spend reporting does not exist natively; Account Tools adds it for buyers and gives you scheduled cross-company exports.

Can a buyer see all orders for their company, not just their own?

Natively, ordering-only contacts see their own orders and location admins see all orders for their location. The Customer Account API exposes orders on Company and CompanyLocation objects, but showing and searching that history requires a custom build or an app.

What exactly does Account Tools add to order search?

Buyers search their entire order history by status, PO, SKU, or location, save filters, and export results. They also see their own spend and reorder patterns, while you see the same reporting across every company on a schedule.

Do I need Shopify Plus to use B2B Supercharge?

Yes. B2B Supercharge requires Shopify Plus and is built on Shopify's native B2B foundation. It installs as a Shopify app, and the base platform is free with modules switching on independently.

Is fixing order search a replatform or a big project?

No. Account Tools installs as an app on your existing Shopify B2B setup. Buyers stay in the customer account they already log into, and nothing about checkout or your theme has to change. Book a demo to see it on your own catalog.
